Language barriers can lead to significant inequalities in healthcare access. This can be because they received worse-quality inpatient care and outpatient preventive services, had limitations accessing care, or forgo getting the much-needed care. Although having a phone interpreting service is helpful and economically viable for healthcare practices, it does not compare to having staff on hand who are Spanish speakers and understand the cultural needs of our Spanish-speaking patients.

My name is Martha Gomez, and I was born in Costa Rica where we speak Spanish. For me, it is very important to be able to speak Spanish and thus be able to communicate any type of instructions to Spanish-speaking patients, in their native language for a better understanding.

Tengo un corazón para ayudar a las personas, especialmente a la comunidad hispana. Ser bilingüe me da la oportunidad de llegar a personas de todo tipo de culturas y orígenes hispanos, trabajando en estrecha colaboración con los proveedores de Digestive Health Specialists, podemos brindar una excelente atención médica a nuestros pacientes hispanos.

My name is Elizabeth Rodriguez Wren, and I am a Certified Medical Assistant. I am bilingual and grew up speaking Spanish and English. Spanish was the first language we spoke at home. I have a heart for helping people, especially in the Hispanic community. Being bilingual gives me the opportunity to reach people of all Hispanic cultures and origins.
